2.2 THE YES AND… OF ART MAKING
THE YES AND… OF ART MAKING
Making art is a little like improvisation comedy, you don’t know where it’s going to end up when you start, but you have a) a little bravery and b) a process to get you there. A key methodology used in improvisation comedy is the philosophy of Yes and… This is where one actor takes what is given to him or her by another actor and builds upon it, expands it, develops it.
Accepting (the yes) and building (the and…).
This is what we have to do when we are developing our sketchbook practice…accept and build, it’s the opposite of harsh judgement, its generative and inquisitive. We keep asking ourselves “yes and what if I did this?” and we start to follow our own guidance and develop our style and voice.
Idea at a glance
Creating art requires a process and a sense of possibility. Keep asking yourself ‘what if’…and you will begin to trust your own guidance.
