BOLD+FOLD ONLINE CLASS
LEARN HOW TO MAKE A CONCERTINA BOOK AND FILL IT WITH BOLD WATERCOLOUR BOTANICALS + VASE AND VESSEL SHAPES
If you’re looking for a process to re-ignite your creativity, this experimental art class full of watercolour paint and cutting and sticking might be right up your street.
HERE’S EXACTLY WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS ONLINE CLASS:
In this class you’ll learn how to make a simple concertina sketchbook. We’ll be filling it with bold botanicals and collaged vase and vessel shapes, predominantly made with watercolour.
The emphasis of this class is on experimentation, discovery and using collage to create wonderful abstract art books. I’ll share techniques using watercolour, drawing and collage.
I’ll take you through the process step by step, sharing lots of advice and lots of art making wisdom and you’ll learn how to make a concertina book and how to fill it… a wonderful new addition to your art making practice.
If you want to get loose and experimental but are daunted by a blank page, this class shares ways to start and gives you techniques you can develop and make your own. It’s a positive and playful class which shares helpful processes to make your art feel more dynamic and interesting.
The class consists of seven videos, over an hour and a half in total. English subtitles are included and can be turned on or off.
WHY IS THIS A USEFUL ART TECHNIQUE?
These concertina art books are low pressure and easy to make… it’s just a few pieces of paper, it’s not meant to be an artwork you display on a wall. The finished piece doesn’t have to be perfect, in fact I encourage ‘beautifully imperfect’ as your goal.
It is a process which often leads to finding a spark, a seed, a discovery which you may want to explore further.
There is something joyous about creating art for the sake of it, making something handmade, tactile and expressive. My hope is that this class will allow you to create with a playful freedom and delight in what you discover along the way.
These concertina art books are a lovely addition to your art making practice, whatever your experience level these art books are an exploratory way to develop your art and discover new delightful things about your own art style.
These concertina books can be part of your art tool-kit for life, they are wonderfully adaptable and joyful to make and can support discovery and experimentation at any point in your art making journey.

TESTIMONIAL
“I loved every moment of this class and feel utterly inspired. Helen's enthusiasm and passion shine through and have ignited my own, and her encouragement to just loosen up, have a play and see what happens has been so helpful and motivating” CLARE G
MATERIALS
To make the art book you will need paper, ( I’m using Fabriano 160gsm (90lb) A4 and A3 paper which I buy in bumper packs, but you can use either size paper and any paper you have which you can fold and which will cope with some paint)… I recommend using a glue stick such as Tombow Professional but you could use Matt medium or any other paper glue.
Essential materials:
Watercolour paint and brushes- any type you have
Paper (see above)
Glue, scissors and ruler
Pencil
Nice to have but not essential:
Trimming knife and water spray bottle
Coloured pencils
This class centres around the use of watercolour, with the addition of pencil and collage paper, but the whole idea of these concertina books is to use what you have, to adapt them to make them your own and use the art materials you have access to. So if you don’t have this exact combination of art materials you can still use the essence of this class to make an interesting and experimental art book. I encourage you to use whatever art supplies you have…
THIS CLASS MAY NOT BE RIGHT FOR YOU:
This class is not for you if:
You want to know exactly how something will turn out before you have started creating it
If abstract art or mixed media art is not your thing
If a messy or unpredictable outcome puts you off
If experimentation doesn’t appeal
If you want bespoke and personalised feedback on your work
