5.2 REMEMBERING

In this lesson the process we are using is a) drawing from observation and then b) using the memory of that experience to create new artworks. I will use the experience of drawing outside at the beach as the drawing from observation part, but you could use a totally different starting point. In this module I will share approaches that could be used with any starting point and any materials. The idea is to explore different types of approach and process, alter them and make them feel good for you.

  • Try drawing some pages in your sketchbook which are inspired by a memory or experience.

  • Paul Gauguin said “I shut my eyes in order to see”, here we are using our mind’s eye to create

  • Drawing from memory can mean we have to mix in our imagination too as we try and fill in the gaps

  • Try experimenting with different materials and timeframes - see which you prefer. Try a one minute drawing or a one hour drawing.

Idea at a glance

Try drawing from observation and then use that experience to draw from memory.
