5.3 REPETITION

In this lesson we are considering repetition as a process and methodology. Repetition is where you come back to the same theme and explore it over and over again. This lesson contains two videos where I show you how to utilise repetition in two different ways.

Here are some things to think about:

  • Repetition can help you to understand and explore a theme in-depth, rather than ‘one and done’ you are developing a response

  • Repetition in your sketchbook means you don’t have to keep thinking ‘what shall I do today?’ - you have a starting point

  • It is often by exploring one theme or subject in different ways that we begin to better understand what interests us about it

  • Repetition helps us to become more fluent in our art making - the more art we make the more likely we are to understand what we like and why

  • Repetition gives us a freedom to try things out and try different approaches. We will feel less concerned about a perfect outcome, if we know we are going to explore the same theme again and again

  • Each drawing or page can inform the next, we take what we learned and liked about one and we apply it to the next

  • Some artist’s have spent their whole art career revisiting the same subject over and over again

Idea at a glance

Repetition is where we explore one subject or starting point in many different ways. It is a useful process to utilise in your sketchbook to develop your style and approach
