5.1 PROCESS IS IMPORTANT

As artists we all need to develop a selection of processes and methods which feel good, enjoyable and which match our own interests and sensibilites. Having some favoured methods means we are not always starting completely from scratch, a handful of processes which we relish and enjoy means we have an approach we can pull out of our kitbag and lean on when we want to get started creating something new.

If you only take one thing from this course let it be this: develop approaches and methods of making your art that you enjoy and use them as guide ropes for your creative practice. Your sketchbook is where you discover, iterate and hone what these processes might be.

In this module we are going to explore some more of these approaches, ways of taking one starting point and expanding it.

We’re going to try various art exercises and ways to take one single idea and build on it, develop it, disrupt it, alter it, deconstruct it and play with it.

It is important to find your own approach to working in a sketchbook, finding methods and processes you can come back to again and again.

In this module I will demonstrate lots of different approaches using a mostly limited palette and a limited set of materials. This is on purpose, I want to show you that these methods can be used with any art materials. I encourage you and invite you to take these methods and use them with your own preferred art materials and colours, make them your own.
